On Thursday, after a quick shufty of the shops in the City Centre, we got a taxi to a supermarket. The driver spoke hardly any English, but Premier league football is a marvellous way of making friends. He had great respect for the Man Utd supporter amongst us, a degree of warmth and fellow feeling for the Newcastle fan. And he thought the fact that one of us followed Derby County was hilarious. I would urge all English teachers to pick a Premier League team and follow its fortunes closely, whatever they feel about football.
